More bots than humans have been visiting my portfolio
Apparently, more bots than humans have been visiting my portfolio.
It crossed 17K+ pageviews, so naturally I wanted to know who was actually visiting it. Spoiler alert: mostly machines.
I checked the last 8 days, August 29 to September 5. 16,041 total visits. 14,266 looked automated. 1,744 looked browser-like. Translation: roughly 89% automated, around 11% browser-like.
But here's where it gets wild. August 29 alone: 13,798 visits. That's 86% of the entire 8-day traffic in a single day. 9,840 requests came with an empty User-Agent. 3,518 came from curl/8.7.1. Only 387 looked like normal browser traffic.
Coincidence? I posted on LinkedIn that exact day.
The rest of the week, everything else combined: 2,243 visits. 1,357 of those looked like normal browser traffic. So August 29 was basically machines going crazy over my portfolio. The other seven days? Mostly normal humans being normal.
And now I have a weird new problem. Why are AI crawlers even crawling my portfolio this much? ClaudeBot is there. Search crawlers are there. Scanners are there. And apparently a whole bunch of other machines are interested too.
My portfolio isn't some massive source of knowledge. It's just me. My projects. My experiments. My stupid ideas that sometimes turn into actual things.
And here's where it gets even crazier. The portfolio itself was built with AI. So somewhere out there, AI is crawling something that AI helped me build, and then another AI might be reading that work and answering questions about me. AI reading AI's work about the human who made it. We're living in some weird timeline, aren't we?
Take those 1,744 browser-like visits. Be conservative. Say only 10% were actually real people. That's still roughly 174 people who may have visited my portfolio in 8 days. And honestly? That number is bigger than I expected.
The thing I worried about the least, my portfolio actually being seen, has suddenly become one of the most important things.
So I guess it's time to rebuild the thing properly. Because apparently I'm no longer just building a portfolio for recruiters. I'm building one for humans, search engines, AI agents, crawlers, scanners, and whatever else has decided my little website is worth visiting.
Now I just need to figure out which bot is going to hire me.
